Louis Vuitton announced the upcoming rerelease of its iconic Bed Trunk; and this September, the brand announced the official release of its contemporary take on this piece of Louis Vuitton history.  The Bed Trunk was first invented in 1868 by the designer himself, for sophisticated travelers with a love for design. The innovative bed was subsequently displayed at many world’s fairs and international exhibitions, becoming popular among travelers, explorers, and nomadic spirits alike.

Designed in collaboration with Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director of the Women’s Collections, and Pharrell Williams, Men’s Creative Director, the trunks sport two new, fresh versions of the classic design.

Inspired by the signature aesthetics of his earlier collections, Ghesquière’s design features a dystopian exterior of engraved metal plates and modernized corner pieces, which deeply contrast with the romantic elements of the trunk’s interior, complete with a mattress decorated with floral patterns similar to those featured in his Spring-Summer 2018 collection.

Finding influence in the original design of the Bed Trunk, Pharrell Williams’ design combines historic elegance with contemporary flair. The jacquard mattress and pillow feature “LV Lovers” embroidery, while touches of blond wood contrast dramatically with the black aluminum hardware. Distressed striped patterns on the outside work in tandem with red and white stripes on the inside, an echo of the 1872 canvas.

Both designers’ takes on the trunk are currently on display and now available to order. The Nicolas Ghesquière Bed Trunk can be seen from September 20th to October 6th at the Louis Vuitton store in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, France, while the Pharrell Williams Bed Trunk will be on display from September 21st to October 4th at the Savoir Rêver Louis Vuitton event at the Hôtel Cheval Blanc in Paris.
