For his collection with Tiffany & Co., multi-hyphenate Pharrell Williams took inspiration from mythology, emulating one of the most powerful Greek gods, Poseidon. Williams shares that he has always had an affinity for water, even growing up in a Virginia Beach community called Atlantis. It makes sense then that his Tiffany Titan collection would evoke both power and sophistication, imbuing each jewelry piece with a kind of mythos. The latest releases from Williams’s collection spotlight freshwater pearls to further evoke this magic.
The design of Poseidon’s mythical trident is mirrored in the spear-like pendants of the Titan collection’s jewelry pieces, juxtaposed by smooth, curved links that create both balance and tension. Tiffany Titan's original release comprised earrings, necklaces and bracelets in 18 karat yellow gold and black titanium in all-metal or diamond iterations. For Williams' latest addition to the collection, freshwater pearls bedeck jewelry pieces along with diamonds, adding an ethereal glow to the already burnished metals.
“In Japan, it was believed that pearls were created from the tears of mythical water creatures,” Williams says. “So I naturally gravitated towards them as a means of expressing this connection to water.”
Pearls have been a hallmark of Tiffany & Co. since the jeweler’s inception in 1837. Iconic, pearl pieces by Tiffany have become a sort of historical iconography. Abraham Lincoln gifted his wife a seed-pearl suite prior to the presidential inaugural ball in 1862. Rare saltwater pearls punctuated the Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany Bird capsule collection, first introduced in 1965.
Tiffany Titan is a continuation of this legacy. Key pieces inset with freshwater pearls include a statement necklace with nearly one total karat of inlaid diamonds as well as a bracelet with two karats-worth of diamond pieces. Gold spike rondelles alternate the pearls, adding an element of both severity and elegance.
