The Volkswagen Bus is more than just a car, but rather an iconic part of culture. From appearing in Little Miss Sunshine, That 70s Show and Outer Banks, the colorful vintage bus has left its mark not only within the sets of Hollywood productions, but also within the garages of all different kinds of everyday people. On June 2, Volkswagen celebrated the first ever International Volkswagen Bus Day in collaboration with the National Day Calendar.
The Volkswagen Bus is the first ever vehicle to receive an International Day. Volkswagen celebrated this feat not only by paying homage to the original make and model, but by debuting a brand new three row version of the all-electric ID. Buzz. In Huntington Beach, California, dedicated fans of the bus gathered to see the new reveal as well as celebrate the VW legacy with live entertainment and a “Cars & Coffee” style gathering for classic Volkswagen Bus owners.
“Whether you call them Buses, Bullis or Kombis, the legacy Type 2s have left on modern culture is unmatched,” said Cameron Batten, Chief Communications Officer, Volkswagen Group of America. “As we continue to introduce the T2’s 21st Century electric successor, the ID. Buzz, we’re thrilled to create this annual day of celebration for Volkswagen bus fans and enthusiasts everywhere.”
The design of the car is meant to embrace the legacy of the vintage style while utilizing new technology within its interior. Made with North American drivers in mind, the ID. Buzz offers 282 horsepower and a skateboard-like design with the car battery mounted in the floor, allowing for a more spacious experience within the vehicle. Aesthetically, the Volkswagen pulls together styles of the past with a vision from the future: the famous VW logo is illuminated with a light line that extends to headlights, two-tone exteriors, a removeable center console that also works as a bottle opener and ice scraper, a 67 inch long sunroof, and an availability of three interior and trim colorways of dark brown and black, light grey and clay, and light brown leatherette seats with yellow piping. With a growing list of all-electric Volkswagen vehicles, the three row version of the all-electric ID. Buzz will hit the North American market in 2024.
