Belgian-Caribbean vocalist Charlotte Adigéry’s new video sums up the malaise we’ve all been feeling these past twelve months, stuck within our own four walls, to the point where things are starting to get trippy.
Signed to Soulwax’s label Deewee, Charlotte has launched the label’s first ever compilation (Foundations) marking the label’s 50th release, with her new single “Bear With Me (and I’ll stand bare before you)”, a striking disco-noire track that addresses feelings of isolation and connection.
All shot from a single viewpoint from inside her apartment, the video speaks to an existence that is all too familiar. Dancing around the living room while daydreaming of dolphins in Venice. As she puts it succinctly in the track: ‘Live streams weren't part of the dream.’
“The video is about being confined thus confronted to the way we live. The cruel irony of having the privilege of standing still, questioning and observing my life in safety while others are fighting for theirs. On the other hand the video is about trying to stay sane while feeling that the walls are closing in on you. Embracing boredom and finding joy in the little things in life. Mastering your thoughts, dreams and fears.”
The video was directed by Alice Kunisue, who Charlotte connected with through label heads David and Stephen (aka Soulwax).
Deewee’s forthcoming compilation—Foundations—will feature new tracks from Soulwax, Brazillian duo Phillipi & Rodrigo and ex-Klaxsons frontman James Righton, among others.
Foundations is out in full on May 7th, the 50th release on the Belgium-based label.
