An exhibition curated by Natacha Polaert celebrating Glenn O’Brien is coming to NYC on September 17 until November 2. The exhibit will include works by Andy Warhol, André Saraiva, Richard Prince, Dance Sachs. The exhibit’s purpose? To do it in the manner of _portrait en creux;_ which, in literature, means when the author defines a character by focusing the reader’s attention on the background, the company the character keeps, and as well as his actions in the universe.
Glenn O’Brien began his career at Interview Magazine and grew to be an editor, television producer, screenwriter, critic, cultural scene maker, and a creative director. He once said “I can’t help but feel like my ads are better than Barbara Kruger’s... although hers are art and mine, well they are just ads...But I think art has logos now, too, so maybe there is no difference.” He defined himself as more than a writer or creative director. He liked to keep busy, and busy he did, by doing it all.
The exhibition will also mark the inaugural project for the new space “Off Paradise” off Walker street. The name refers to Paradise Alley where the artists’ and poets’ colony was. Don’t miss it: Glenn O’Brien Center Stage.
