Hollywood history meets modern sophistication at The Culver Hotel. Located in downtown Culver City, this legacy destination preserves the elegant flair of an entertainment golden age all but lost to time, and the hotel’s unique place in movie history has earned it the designation of being a national historic landmark. Just minutes from the famed Culver Studios–and having played host to film’s most historic names (legend has it that John Wayne won the hotel itself from previous owner Charlie Chaplin in a poker game)–Old Hollywood lore permeates the ambiance of an unequaled LA locale.
The hotel recently launched a commemorative, one of a kind event with its studio history in mind. The Golden Screen: A Cinema Series is a monthly screening arrangement marking the centennial anniversary of both MGM and The Culver Hotel. In partnership with The Culver Theater just across the street, the series will showcase a curated selection of famed MGM films followed by a themed gathering back at the hotel’s Velvet Lounge.
For its introductory screening, guests were treated to a big screen showing of the 1964 James Bond classic Goldfinger, followed by cocktails and hors d’oeuvres inspired by the film: an Oddjob Cosmopolitan, a Goldfinger Martini (complete with gold flakes and a lemon twist), champagne and an assortment of shrimp cocktail, fries, and “golden nuggets” topped with creme fraiche and caviar. Extending through the end of July, all future screenings will be followed by film-themed drinks and food.
In keeping with the centennial spirit, The Culver Hotel is proudly offering timeless dining options open to both guests and the public at large. Inspired by European cafe culture, classics like Crab Louie, Steak Frites, and Mediterranean Sea Bass are newly reimagined for the modern diner at the hotel’s restaurant. With large spaces available for events and gatherings, patrons have the opportunity to order an assortment of classic cocktails from a roaming martini cart as they unwind in this rare vestige of Hollywood’s most glamorous age.
A timeless, 46-room art deco building, The Culver Hotel has been meticulously restored by creative director Maya Mallick, who took ownership of the property in 2007. Its charming suites combine early 20th century aesthetics and contemporary amenities for guests who wish to be transported back to an era of celebrated luxury, with live music inspired by the Roaring Twenties and the projection of classic films in the hotel’s public spaces.
The next Golden Screen Cinema Series is showing A Fistful of Dollars on March 27th.
