As 2023 comes to a close, The Hammer Museum and the Museum of Modern Art come together to reflect and retell some of the year’s best moments in cinema. Right before awards season kicks off, MoMA compiles their contenders, a list of 10 movies released within the past year that they found to be particularly groundbreaking.
Sourced from both major theater releases and film festivals around the world, their search for newly released timeless movies allow fans to get another chance to catch a showing on the big screen. In addition to the screening, the 10 nights of cinema includes a post screening conversation from someone who worked on the project. In years past, Greta Gerwig spoke about Ladybird and Olivia Wilde about Booksmart while Brendan Fraser made an appearance for The Whale and Chadwick Boseman for Black Panther.
MoMA’s 2023 contenders include showings of Oppenheimer, The Boy and the Heron, The Taste of Things with Trân Anh Hùng, The Zone of Interest with special guest, Priscilla with Stacey Battat, Maestro with special guest, May December with Todd Haynes and Samy Burch, You Hurt My Feelings with Nicole Holofcener, Past Lives with Greta Lee, and lastly Killers of the Flower Moon. Showings and events for the MoMA Contenders at The Hammer begin on November 29 and conclude on December 14.
